WHO COULD FORGET THE MOST INFAMOUS FUGITIVE MANHUNT IN U.S. HISTORY?! TEXAS SEVEN’S JOSEPH GARCIA TELLS ALL FROM DEATH ROW. On December 13, 2000, seven prisoners escaped from Connally Maximum near San Antonio, Texas. Among them were charismatic leader, George Rivas, right-hand man Larry Harper, Keith Newbury, Patrick Murphy, Joseph Garcia, and young Randy Halprin; tagged by the media as 'The Texas Seven'. They jumped into a van waiting nearby and their cross-country plight began. The search for the Texas Seven spanned over six weeks and was said to be the largest manhunt in U.S. history involving the FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshall, capturing round-the-clock media attention. Along the way, The Texas Seven shot and killed Irving police officer Aubrey Hawkins. These are the raw confessions of Texas Seven's Joseph Garcia, of sins he committed and sins committed against him since the time he was born. Join co-writer, Selma Kerren, as she accompanies Garcia on his epic journey of truth. Garcia’s style is raw and humorous, with the rarest ability to take readers through an intense range of emotions, as his story becomes darker with every turn of the page. Selma Kerren is an Orange County, California, writer. Contacted by Garcia in 2001, Kerren took on the project believing Garcia’s story to have a profound, social message. The result is a street-smart, heart-breaking rhapsody.

I just received this book in the mail and I read it in under an hour. I can't say it's high quality literature, although it's written with passion and sensibility. Where was the child welfare system for a child like Joseph Garcia? How did the authorities not intervene to permanently remove him from his mother's care and ensure he had a stable family life? I don't know the system in the United States, but clearly something has failed. There will always be parents who screw up and there should be an adequate social safety net to provide for their care.

Having said that, his story is just heartbreaking because of how close he came to his initial crime not happening at all. A few fateful clicks of circumstances conspired to create a situation that led to his first crime - I say this without intending to take a position on his guilt and his argument that it was self-defence. How some people teeter on the edge of a normal life and a completely abnormal life!

A good read if you are interested in more details about the death penalty in Texas. I got this book after seeing Garcia interviewed in Werner Herzog's documentary and it provides worthwhile background details to Garcia's life.

A Cry In The Wilderness is not, and was not meant to be a graphic crime scene account of the Texas Seven, but is more of a biographical account of the life of one man that was doomed to failure from the start. In his direct and conversational manner, Joseph will take you through his life, introducing you to the friends and family that molded him from his youngest years, until the time of his incarceration in the Connally Unit of TX. While a history of abuse is never an excuse for the commission of crime, it does demonstrate how some culpability should be borne by those who commit this abuse on children and leaves one to wonder what if things had been different. A great read for those interested in criminal psychology, child psychology, or non-sensational accounts of human behavior.
There is not much in this book that is not pure fiction.
One to read
Who would have known that such a true but chilling story led to one of the greatest man hunts in the history of man.
Bought it here when our library was unable to get it. Great book.
This book is a great read about Joseph Garcia's life. I was truly horrified to read the things that happened to him in his life. This book gives you the other side of the story about criminals, and why they became that way.
To many simple illustrations. Not enough scriptural references bit mostly opinionated experiences.
